You're literally protecting buildings from getting struck by lightning. The work happens on rooftops, church steeples, and the sides of skyscrapers where most people never go. It's specialized enough that once you're trained, you're in demand.
Lightning rod installation is physical work at serious heights. You'll spend your days on roofs, climbing ladders and scaffolding, measuring roof layouts, and fastening copper or aluminum rods to buildings. The work is seasonal in many regions, with most jobs concentrated in spring and fall when weather is most stable. You work in small crews, usually two to four people, and the pace depends on the building. A church steeple might take a day. A large industrial complex could take weeks. Weather stops the work completely, so irregular paychecks are part of the reality.
Your day starts with a site assessment. You review the building layout, identify the highest points, and plan the rod placement. Then you're climbing. You haul copper rods, connectors, and grounding materials up ladders or scaffolding. You drill or bolt rods to the structure, connect them with copper cable, and route the grounding system down to earth rods buried in the ground. You're also testing systems with a multimeter to verify conductivity. The work is repetitive on smaller jobs but varies significantly on larger projects. You might spend a day on a residential roof, then move to a three-week job on a 20-story building. You'll also do maintenance work on existing systems, checking for corrosion, loose connections, and damage from storms.
You need to be comfortable with height and not let it mess with your head. Vertigo disqualifies you fast. You also need to be detail-oriented because a bad ground connection means the system doesn't work, and a building that gets struck because you cut corners is a liability nightmare. People who thrive here like working with their hands, take pride in precision, and don't mind physical labor. You're not sitting in an office, and you're not working with the public. You're solving a technical problem with materials and tools.
Start by getting hired as a helper or apprentice with a lightning protection company. No degree required, but you need a clean record and a willingness to work at height. Most employers prefer someone with basic electrical knowledge or prior construction experience, but they'll train the right person from scratch. Look for NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) certified installers in your area or check the Lightning Protection Institute for member companies. An apprenticeship typically runs 3-4 years and combines on-the-job training with classroom work on electrical theory and NFPA 780 standards. Once you're certified, you can work as a journeyman installer, which opens better pay and more consistent work. Some installers move into inspection and engineering roles after 5-7 years, which offers steadier income year-round.
Working at height takes a psychological toll on some people, even after training. Your body gets used to it, but the stress never completely goes away. You're also dealing with weather dependency hard. A lightning storm moving in kills your day immediately. Winter months in cold climates can mean almost no work, which creates income uncertainty even if you're skilled. Equipment costs come out of your pocket early in your career, and safety gear is non-negotiable but expensive. The other reality: lightning rod demand is tied to construction cycles. During economic downturns, new builds slow down and so does installation work. Some installers pick up inspection and maintenance gigs to smooth out the income gaps, but that requires additional certification and network building.
